R U OK?

R U OK is an absolutely incredible organisation that inspires and empowers each and every one of us to meaningfully connect with the people around us and support anyone who is struggling with life.

Tomorrow is R U OK DAY and the main message this year is “there’s more to say after R U OK?”. So in line with this, let’s talk about the 4 steps to having a conversation that could change a life.

The first step is to ask “R U OK?”

Have you noticed your loved one is behaving different to what they normally would, maybe they are less chatty than usual, or they have become quite withdrawn or on edge? If you have, then it is time to ask R U OK? Prepare yourself for where that conversation may lead and accept that you cannot fix their problems.

Please know that you do not need to be an expert to have this conversation - just a good friend and a great listener!

The second step is to listen.

If they are willing to open up, be sure not to interrupt or rush the conversation. Simply listen, show empathy and acknowledge how they are feeling.

The third step is to encourage action.

Practicing self care is a great starting point. For example; meditation, exercise, soaking in a bath, lighting a scented candle, reading a book in the sunshine or going for a walk.

If your loved one has been feeling down for more than a couple of weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. This may not be an easy step but it will be absolutely worth it.

And the last step is to check in.

After you’ve had this conversation, it is so important to have a follow up chat. Ask how they have been going since you last spoke. Communicating genuine care and concern can make all the difference.

Someone you care about could be feeling anxious or worried during these uncertain times. So remember to be kind and check in on your loved ones because a conversation really could change a life.
